Premier League's foreign legion harms England's World Cup hopes, claims United legend Sir Bobby Charlton | Mancunian Matters

England are ‘a way off’ from success and will not win the World Cup in Brazil, claimed Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton.

And the Old Trafford legend – who is top scorer for United (249) and England (49) – blamed the Premier League’s influx of foreign players for damaging the national team’s strength and quality.
The 1966 World Cup winner dismissed Roy Hodgson’s chances of leading the nation to success in two years’ time – despite them being favourite to top Group H.
Hodgson takes the Three Lions to Moldova this Friday, without injured Andy Carroll, Ashley Cole and Wayne Rooney, to begin their first of four World Cup qualifiers this year.

"They haven't got a lot of top-quality players to choose from and, because of that, you must feel it is going to be difficult to win things,” Charlton said in a prelude to new book ‘England Centurions’.
"You cannot see it happening in Brazil at the next World Cup, for instance.
"Perhaps, if the right group of players come together and stay together for a while and gel into a team, with the right manager, then perhaps it might happen, but I have to be honest and say it's a way off.
"Since the European Union and the influx of so many foreign players, there is a definite shortage of English players from which the England manager can select, it has become far more difficult.
"I feel sorry for the England manager, whoever he is, as he simply doesn't have enough players to choose from."
Charlton, who now has an ambassadorial role at United, has seen striker Wayne Rooney arrive as an 18-year-old and deal with the pressure of being England’s shining hope on an international stage.
But despite exploding onto the stage at the 2004 European Championship, the former Everton forward has failed to live up to expectations and Charlton insists it is the role of the manager to utilise the quality in him.
"It is up to the England manager to find a way of bringing the best out of him at international level, and how best to handle him," said Charlton.
"He is handled very well at Manchester United, and I am sure it will evolve with England and if that is the case I feel sure that Wayne is the player most capable of breaking my record of 49 goals, which has stood the test of time."
